Insights of the Week
IIoT and Remote O&M
is going to have a major impact on the flow control and treat industry.
As part of the program
N031
Industrial IOT and Remote O&M, we are
providing IIoW (Wisdom) support which includes various
Decision Guides. They are described
at
Decisions.
Guides for high performance valves are now being compiled on a collaborative
basis. Five specific Decision Guides are being prepared. Four of the
guides are on valves used in specific oil and gas applications: choke valves,
high pressure gate valves, rising stem ball valves, and molecular sieve
switching valves. In the power industry, all high-performance steam valves are
being analyzed. This includes details on valves in each aspect of the steam
cycle and variations between coal, combined cycle gas turbines, and nuclear.

U.S. Gas Export Projects:
Gas export opportunities are more attractive with the new administration in
Washington and some confidence that gas can be piped to ports for export.
Eagle LNG is construction an LNG Export Terminal in Jacksonville FL.
The facility will be owned and operated by Eagle LNG, a consortium of Clean
Energy, GE Ventures, GE Energy Financial Services and Ferus Natural Gas Fuels.
Earlier conceived as a facility serving domestic markets, the proposed project
plans to supply LNG to Caribbean and other overseas destinations. It will also
provide fuel to ships cruising along the East Coast and other domestic
commercial vehicles, making it the first terminal in the US to provide fuel for
cargo ships. Natural gas will be received and liquefied at the facility and LNG
will be temporarily stored before being transported by ocean-going vessels,
trucks and containers for export purposes and marine bunkering trade.
Construction on the project is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2017
and commissioning is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2018. Expected
operational life of the project is 30 years.

Filtration & Separation IIoT Webinar on Thursday
Filtration and separation involves many variables. The applications are
frequently critical to successful manufacturing of products and delivery of
clean water. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) empowered by the
Industrial Internet of Wisdom (IIoW) will have a $10 billion impact on the
market size by 2026 and will divert another $10 billion through different market
routes. Sales of filtration and separation equipment and consumables will
exceed $95 billion in 2026. Of this total $20 billion will be attributable
to the impact of IIoT and Remote O&M. This is the latest forecast in the
Mcilvaine publication IIoT and Remote O&M.

There is already a substantial market in certain industries such as oil and gas,
pulp and paper, and food processing. The IIoT & Remote O&M segment of the
market will be growing by 13% per year over the next decade compared to just 3%
for the rest of the industry.
There has been a great deal of analysis relative to the convergence of
information technology and operations technology. Smart sensors, open
platforms and improved data analytics are creating the equivalent of millions of
continually updated white papers on the performance of individual components,
sub systems, and systems. The use of subject matter experts has typically
been addressed without regard to the importance of innovation.
This avalanche of white papers is going to justify an army of experts each able
to focus on a very narrow niche. It is also going to dictate
interconnection between individuals at each plant within the organization
operating the filtration and separation systems. It is going to dictate
interconnection between the end users, associations, and suppliers to an extent
commensurate with the increase in available knowledge.
This interconnection is occurring partly through acquisitions. Suez is
purchasing GE Water. It has a remote monitoring center in France. It
also owns and operates municipal water and wastewater plants throughout the
world. It is operating 40% of the municipal plants in Chile. It can
monitor centrifuge performance and then add GE Betz chemicals to improve
dewatering from the remote monitoring center.
Some industries can light the way for others. Andritz automation has
created FiberVision and can remotely measure particle size of the fibers in the
pulp slurry in a pulp and paper mill. The system measures other parameters
in all the processes and provides guidance for the operators. Andritz is also
offering predictive control algorithms to better operate thickeners, flotation
devices, and filters in mining applications.
A number of centrifuge suppliers have comprehensive monitoring and control
systems. GEA has Wewatch®. Centrisys remotely monitors 32 key operating
parameters and offers to log in and make non-critical adjustments to help
optimize the process. Alfa Laval Octopus monitors and controls all aspects of
the dewatering process.
A number of the filter vendors are moving forward aggressively in the IIoT
space. Mann & Hummel has a new IIoT laboratory in Singapore where it has
10 projects in the pipeline. Donaldson remotely monitors bulk filtration
systems for fuel. Restaurant Technologies monitors fryer filter health in
restaurants. Aqua Clear monitors RO and nanofilter systems for industrial and
commercial facilities. The Evoqua Wallace & Tiernan division has extensive
process monitoring systems with intelligent visualization.
There has been a move to higher efficiency filters for gas turbines. The
increased filter cost is justified by lower maintenance. AAF combines
remote monitoring with a maintenance package including inventory management.
This comprehensive approach provides an opportunity to provide the lowest total
cost of ownership.
There are some power generation companies operating hundreds of gas turbines.
One company with a large number of gas turbines is BHE Energy. Mcilvaine has
created a beta site to demonstrate the value of IIoW to empower IIoT. BHE
also has coal fired plants and wind turbines. So it would have thousands of
lubrication systems. A new kidney shaped filter at one of their plants has
proved superior in a pulverizer application. Cuno string wound
filters are specified at most of their plants but due to particulate
contamination related to air cooling the condensate filter needed to be replaced
at one plant with a Pall 25-micron filter. When case histories and the
knowledge of the plant operators and suppliers are pooled for a company such as
BHE, the impact of IIoT becomes more cost effective.

collaborate with other players are provided at:

$31
billion Municipal Water and Wastewater IIoT Market by 2026
Municipal water, wastewater treatment and distribution facilities are embracing
automation and remote operation and monitoring. The Industrial Internet of
Things (IIoT) empowered by the Industrial Internet of Wisdom (IIoW) will have a
$15 billion impact on the market by 2026 and will divert another $16 billion
through different market routes. Sales of all flow control and
treatment for these plants will exceed $100 billion in 2026. Of this total
$31 billion will be attributable to the impact of IIoT and Remote O&M.

This potential is illustrated by the role that Suez is playing in Chile.
The company operates 40% of the water and wastewater plants in the country.
Suez has a remote-control center in France and is monitoring key parameters at
water and wastewater facilities throughout the world. It also owns
Degremont who has furnished much of the equipment at these plants. If the
guidance from the remote-control center is not sufficient then the equipment
supplier who also has the cloud connection can provide advice.
Suez has just announced the acquisition of GE Water. This adds additional
equipment expertise but also a substantial treatment chemical capability with
the Betz operations. So, the operator and the remote center can also
benefit from the expertise of the treatment chemicals experts and can change the
quantities and types of chemicals remotely.
Xylem has moved forward aggressively with the purchase of smart meter firm
Sensus. It also acquired Viscenti which provides data analytics to predict
pipe breakage problems as well as providing analytics of the smart meter data.
The smart water metering market emerged in the 2000s as water utilities
responded to global trends of using detailed and near real time data and
analytics to deliver more predictive and proactive services. The backbone of
this effort is advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technology. AMI can
provide a remote and constant two-way data link between utilities, meters and
consumers. Communications are delivered through various technologies including
power line communications (PLC), telephony, broadband, fibre optic cable,
wireless radio frequency and cellular transmissions.
The revenue in smart meters already exceeds $2 billion/yr. worldwide. This
market segment will grow at near double digit rates over the forecast period.
One of the biggest opportunities for IOT and Remote O&M is the control of
dissolved oxygen used in aeration in the biological treatment step.
The is a tendency for operators to use excess oxygen. This can increase
wastewater plant energy costs by 25% or more. Proper sensing and remote
control can provide substantial savings.
There is a big opportunity for water treatment chemical companies who are in
reality selling a service. The Nalco 360 Expert
Center operates 24/7 to ensure someone from Nalco is always watching each
system. The expert center will routinely make recommendations for operational
improvements and will also take immediate action on alarms. All the expert
center professionals hold degrees in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering and have
real world experience in water treatment. Eighty years of water treatment
expertise drives comprehensive, on-going training program, resulting in a team
of highly
trained specialists.
