59EI Gas Turbine and Combined Cycle Supplier Program
“Demineralization and Degasification of Boiler Feedwater in Gas Turbine Combined Cycle Power Plants” Was the Hot Topic Hour on August 28
The webinar on August 28 focused on demineralization and degasification in combined cycle gas turbine plants. Participants can review lots of information ahead of time posted to Degasification and Demineralization. This website covers semiconductor, pharmaceutical, nuclear and coal applications. However, this webinar focused on the unique needs of combined cycle power plants. This includes the need for rapid cycling due to the role of the gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) in supplementing wind and solar. Many new gas turbine plants are using treated municipal wastewater which presents its own set of problems.
Tom Tschanz of the McIlvaine Company provided the initial overview.
Deaeraton with forced and induced draft designs, degasification with vacuum degasifiers and membranes will be analyzed. Locations including pre treatment, post treatment and condensate return will be reviewed. The advantages of the Membrana membrane approach will be compared to alternative mechanical approaches and to the chemical approach which entails continuing chemical cost plus energy consumption and water cost with excess blowdown.
Ion exchange will be compared to electrodeionizaton. Michael Snow president of Snowpure will present the case for electrodeionization. He will address concerns relative to the capability to handle the flow from a large GTCC with the higher-capacity EXL™ product.
Ken Kuruc of Hach related the desired measurements to the reasons why they are important. For example, cationic conductivity is a conductivity measurement after cation exchange: allocations, and, therefore, ammonium ions (NH4+), are removed and converted into hydrogen ions (H+). Inorganics (chloride, sulfates) and organics (acetate, formate) anions present (counter ion of cations, Cl-, SO42-) can be easily determined because they are in their highly conductive acidic form (H+, Cl- ; 2H+, SO42-). Any increase in cationic conductivity highlights anionic contamination. A detailed analysis of the instruments, processes and measurement locations by Hach is posted on the site.
Brad Bueker of Kiewit summarized from direct experience and also the extensive work of personnel at organizations such as the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to show that the reducing environment produced by oxygen scavengers initiates and propagates flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) in the feedwater system and other components of high pressure steam generators, including heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs). Since 1986, FAC induced attacks have caused numerous failures, some with fatalities, at a number of power plants in the U.S. Yet, specifications for new power plants, most of which are now combined cycle units, often continue to call for oxygen scavenger feed to the condensate, even though the feedwater system typically contains no copper alloys. He presented a paper on this subject at IWC. We will seek permission to reproduce it for the site.
The webinar was free-of-charge to power plant owners. To register:

Mexico’s gross domestic product fell less-than-expected in the last quarter, according to official data.
Mexican GDP 1.6% vs. 1.5% forecast. In a report, Insituto Nacional de Estadistica Y Geografia said that Mexican GDP fell to a seasonally adjusted 1.6%, from 1.8% in the preceding quarter. (The remaining text is not included in this sample.)

India
Reserve Bank of India has projected around 5.5% GDP growth for 2014-15 after two painful years of sub-5% growth, as the new government focuses on fiscal consolidation and is taking steps to clear stalled industrial and construction projects to shake up a stagnating economy.
This is in line with the projections made at the start of 2014-15 and RBI is now looking at the prospect of a sustainable 7% growth in the medium term if the government takes the reforms process forward in the areas of industry, services, international trade, labor markets, public sector management and financial markets.
"The Indian economy stands at crossroads that could take it from a slow bumpy lane to a faster highway," RBI said in its annual report for 2013-14. (The remaining text is not included in this sample.)
EUROPE / AFRICA / MIDDLE EAST
Israel
War is supposed to be “good” for the economy, according to some experts, by boosting government spending — but that hasn’t happened in Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza. The travel industry is in a shambles, tourism’s summer high season is ruined, and much-needed work isn’t getting done because 50,000 reserve soldiers, most of them members of the workforce, are otherwise occupied on the front lines. This is in addition to the expense of the war itself.
It was inevitable that the war would have an impact on the economy, according to Psagot Investment House. In its report, the group put the cost of the war at a quarter of a percent of what had been an expected 2.9% growth in GDP for 2014. Taking into account the losses to business, the expenses the government is facing, and the cost of repairing the economic damage, the report bumps down the expected growth rate for Israel for the year to 2.4% – taking into account the possibility that the war will last for another week and a half. If it goes longer, Psagot said, it may have to revise its figures again.
Even so, Psagot predicted the losses would be temporary.
The group made its assessment on the basis of another “summer war” — the Second Lebanon War, which took place during July and August of 2006. The war also hurt tourism and required extensive resources to repair buildings that were damaged by Hezbollah rockets. Iron Dome, which has spared lives and property this time by intercepting incoming rockets, had not been invented yet. While far fewer buildings have been damaged in the current war, Psagot said, that “gain” is wiped out by the fact that life in many more cities in the center of the country are being affected in many ways by Hamas rockets. Hezbollah was unable to reach farther south than Hadera, while Hamas rockets have hit Tel Aviv and well to the north. . (The remaining text is not included in this sample.)
