Pumps, World Markets: Updates June, 2003 (excerpts only)

OVERVIEW

The pump revenue forecast for all pump types in all industries for all countries for the twelve months ending May 31, 2004 is up 0.3% from last month to $28.9 billion. However, this represents a 0.4 percent increase in the Americas, a 0% increase in Asia and a 0.3% increase in Europe/Africa. We have just completed the 2007 forecast. World pump revenues will be $34.2 billion.

The SARS epidemic is slowing Chinese pump projects. Most directly hit are service revenues as foreign companies are limiting travel to the country. However this problem is likely to be temporary with no long-term impact.

The Europe/Middle East/Africa segment has been positively impacted by the oil producers segment in Iraq. Capital improvement projects are now accelerating.

The power outlook is improving in the U.S.  Pump revenues per megawatt are four times higher for coal-fired generators than for gas turbine plants. There is a significant switch to coal for future generations. A number of new coal plants are under construction as detailed below. This changes revenue forecasts for each pump type.

This month there have been 3,000 revenue forecast changes out of the 30,000 forecasts in the report.

MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER

At a time when construction is in the doldrums in many industry sectors, the municipal wastewater treatment segment is booming. Over 2,000 projects are being tracked in the online McIlvaine publication, U.S. Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities and People.

Projects are in three categories: new plants, expansions of existing plants, and upgrades of processes at existing plants. In order to keep pace with increasing population and to supply sewage treatment to areas which currently have only individual septic systems, new plants with a capacity of over 900 million gallons/day (MGD) are in some form of planning or construction. An even larger number of plants are expanding to meet future needs of their service area.

The biggest reason for the boom is the upgrading of processes. New rules relative to the disposal of biosolids (sludge) are a driving force in the construction of sludge drying, incineration, and other solids treatment processes. Odor control is another big driving force. Scrubbers and biofilter systems are being installed at lift stations, headworks, dewatering facilities, and other areas. Covers and other modifications are being made to clarifiers and tanks.-------------------------
