SubjECT: Large
pump market analyzed
There are fifty or more companies around-the-world who build pumps with flows of
more than 15,000 gpm. These pumps are used in flood control, but are also used
in water and wastewater applications. In Pumps: World Markets we will be
providing a detailed analysis of this sector in an upcoming addition to the
report.
The market for pumps in the power industry is on the upturn. The reduced demand
for gas turbine plants actually benefits rather than hurts the pump industry.
Coal-fired power plants spend four times as much on pumps for the same
electrical output as do gas turbine operators. The market for slurry pumps for
FGD services is going to be very large. Babcock & Wilcox has booked 6,000 MW of
FGD systems in China in just the last two years.
Another bright spot is ultrapure water. The semiconductor industry is
rejuvenating and with it the need for large quantities of ultra pure high
resistivity water. When this is combined with the growth in biotechnology and
flat panel displays, the end result is double-digit growth for the pumps used in
ultrapure water systems.
