Market Shares Keep Changing in $381 Billion Fluid/Gas Treatment Market
The proposed acquisition of Charter by Colfax is additional recognition of a
very big market which includes both liquid and gas treatment. Colfax is involved
with pumps and the liquid treatment market. Charter, through its Howden group,
is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of industrial fans to move gases.
Presently, Colfax ranks twenty in pump sales with revenues of just under $500
million. It is not in the top one hundred in the broader fluid treatment
category. If this acquisition is completed, the company will be in the top one
hundred. These rankings are continually revised in Fluid/Gas Treatment and
Control: World Markets published online by the McIlvaine Company
www.mcilvainecompany.com.
Air/gas treatment represents $80 billion of the $381 billion total.
Fluid Treatment & Control
TOTALS
Pumps & Valves $186
Liquid Treatment $115
Air/Gas Treatment $80
TOTALS $381
There are a number of other divestitures and acquisitions changing the fluid/gas
treatment rankings. ITT will create a separate water company and Tyco will
separate into three companies. In both cases the fluid treatment ends up in one
of the entities so the rankings do not change.
The recent acquisition of the Norit membrane business by Pentair strengthened
its position as number five with fluid/gas treatment sales of $2.8 billion. The
acquisition also provides a significant additional presence in the industrial
filtration business.
Not too many equipment companies are in both the air and liquid business. One
exception is Siemens who acquired an air pollution control company (Wheelabrator)
and a liquid treatment company (USFilter). GE has BHA in the air pollution
control business and GE Water which is the assimilation of various acquisitions
including Betz, Ionics, Zenon and Osmonics.
Many filter media companies are in both air and liquid markets. Ahlstrom, W.L.
Gore, Lydall, Hollingsworth & Vose and Freudenberg are some of the larger
participants. Materials companies are also active in both areas. Industeel is a
major supplier of corrosion resistant steel to both the air and water
industries. Dow Chemical is active in filtration equipment but also in the high
performance plastics used in water piping. It also supplies treatment chemicals.
Albemarle has moved into the air segment with the acquisition of Sorbent
Technologies. Calgon Carbon was primarily in water treatment, but the big new
market for mercury removal from gas streams has created a sizable market. Lhoist
is a major supplier of calcium products for the treatment of both air and water.
LaFarge, Graymont and Mississippi Lime are also participants. FMC and Solvay are
pursuing growing markets in air treatment chemicals.

Utilities Actively Seeking Renewable Power
A clear indication that renewable energy is moving forward is the steady
announcement by utilities of their desire to purchase energy from renewable
sources. Recent examples mentioned in McIlvaine Renewable Energy Update follow.
Since January 1, 2011, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has added more than
1,200 MW of clean, green energy to its renewable portfolio. The utility recently
announced it has signed two more contracts: a 25-year power purchase agreement
for 150 MW of solar power with Solar Gen 2 LLC and a one-year contract for 40 MW
of geothermal power with Silicon Valley Power.

Great River Energy has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for community-based
energy developed (C-BED) renewable energy resources.
“We’re issuing this RFP to evaluate if additional C-BED renewable resources can
provide value to our member cooperatives in the future,” said Jon Brekke, Great
River Energy Vice President of Member Services. “Resources that qualify as
community-based energy development are eligible to submit proposals. We are most
interested in projects that offer minimal impact to our wholesale power rates.”
Great River Energy is subject to the Minnesota Renewable Energy Standard, which
requires electric utilities to supply an increasing percentage of their energy
sales from renewable energy sources, reaching 25 percent by 2025. Eligible
energy technologies include: wind, solar, hydroelectric of less than 100 MW,
biomass, municipal solid waste, landfill gas and anaerobic digesters, and
hydrogen produced from any of the previous resources. Minnesota state law
encourages utilities to evaluate C-BED projects and to report efforts made to
acquire C-BED resources.
*****
Consumers Energy is expanding options for customers interested in developing
their own renewable energy sources.
The utility is significantly increasing its Experimental Advanced Renewable
Program. That program provides for the long-term purchase of renewable energy
generated by solar energy systems owned by the company’s electric customers.
The program is adding an additional 3 MW following recent approval by the
Michigan Public Service Commission. The original phases of the program are now
completed adding 2 MW of solar panels on roofs and yards across Michigan.
Customer installations under this program were recently completed at 102
locations throughout Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.
*****
FirstEnergy Corp. announced that a Request for Proposal (RFP) will be conducted
to secure Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) for customers of its Ohio
utilities — Ohio Edison, Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and Toledo
Edison — to help meet the renewable energy requirements established under Ohio’s
energy law.
SRECs represent the environmental attributes of solar renewable electricity
generation. For every megawatt hour of solar renewable electricity generated, an
equivalent amount of SRECs are produced.
The RFP is seeking SREC’s for FirstEnergy’s Ohio utilities for 2011. The SRECs
being solicited include solar from Ohio-certified generation facilities, and
solar from certified SREC generation facilities in states contiguous to Ohio.
*****
SaskPower has selected 13 new environmentally-preferred power projects through
its second annual Green Options (GO) Partners Program lottery.
“This year SaskPower received more than 300 applications for the GO Partners
Program, up significantly from 2010,” said Rob Norris, Minister responsible for
SaskPower. “The 13 projects selected will add about 45 MW of green electricity
to the electricity grid, helping to meet the province’s growing need for power
with no additional greenhouse gas emissions.”
Through the GO Partners Program, SaskPower purchases up to 50 MW of renewable
power from private developers, with up to 25 MW coming from wind power. Projects
must be between 100 kilowatts and 10 MW in size. Applications are initially
selected through a lottery process.
