Important Discussion of Efficiency Improvement and It’s Free on September 21
Every one percent improvement in efficiency results in a one percent reduction
in mercury, toxic metals, SO2, HCl and CO2. The first step
in meeting the upcoming Utility MACT is to investigate efficiency improvement.
On September 21 we are conducting a free webinar to discuss some of the
approaches to improved efficiency. Dave Earley from AMC Power will discuss how
the continuous measurement of and the control of burner line coal flows can
improve combustion. The continuous measurement of the coal particle velocities
can also help improve flame stability and PA control and thus help improve NOx,
LOI, slagging/fouling, coal layout and more: When combined with the AMC IBAMS
for on line measurement and control of burner SA, air/fuel ratios can be more
tightly controlled to help reduce CO, improve O2 distribution and
thus improve NOx and boiler efficiency. You can register for

Geothermal Energy Makes Steady Progress
Geothermal energy does not receive the same amount of attention given to wind
and solar energy. Nevertheless it is making steady progress in meeting the need
for renewable energy. This is just one of the topics covered in McIlvaine
Renewable Energy Update and Projects. Excerpts from items on this
subject follow.
U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the availability of up
to $70 million in new funding over three years for technology advancements in
geothermal energy to accelerate development of this promising clean energy
resource. Innovations in exploration technologies to locate geothermal
energy resources and improvements in resource characterization, drilling, and
reservoir engineering techniques will enable clean energy from geothermal
sources to be a key contributor to the nation’s renewable energy supply.
By targeting funding to research and develop these innovative technologies, the
department aims to reduce the upfront cost of geothermal energy systems, expand
their use, and enable the United States to tap the huge potential of this
renewable energy resource.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), new geothermal resources could
add up to 30 gigawatts of renewable energy to the U.S. energy supply, and
enhanced geothermal systems – through the development of engineered reservoirs
and other methods – have the potential for an even greater impact.

GDF Suez, through its subsidiary International Power, PT, Supreme Energy
(Supreme Energy) and Marubeni Corporation entered into a joint venture agreement
for the development of the Rantau geothermal project located in the South
Sumatra Province in Indonesia.
The targeted 220 MW geothermal power plant in the Rantau Dedap area is part of
the Indonesian Government’s second 10,000 MW accelerated electricity development
program. It will contribute to meeting the rising need for electricity in
the country, using renewable energy resources.

Ormat Technologies, Inc. announced that is received the largest product order in
the company’s history. The Supply contract and the Engineering,
Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract, signed by two of its subsidiaries
with Mighty River Power Limited (Mighty River Power) of New Zealand, are for the
first stage of the Ngatamariki geothermal project valued at a total of
approximately 130 million. The new power plant is to be constructed on the
Ngatamariki Geothermal Field in New Zealand. Construction of the power
plant is expected to be completed within 24 months from the contract date.
Dita Bronicki, CEO of Ormat Technologies said: “This marks the largest EPC
contract that Ormat has ever entered into for one geothermal plant. Our
backlog since the beginning of the year has more than doubled and, as of the
beginning of the second quarter, stands at record high of over $230 million.
***
Mustang Geothermal Corp. announced that it has contracted with EDCON-PRJ Inc. of
Lakewood, CO to acquire a total of 1045 line kilometers of high-resolution
aeromagnetic data over geothermal properties of interest in the Great Basin
region of Nevada, USA.
The intent of the company is to use high-resolution geophysical data in mapping
of the fault structures that provide conduits necessary for the circulation of
geothermal fluids and definition of permissive areas for the formation of
geothermal reservoirs.
***
U. S. Geothermal Inc. announced the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement
between its wholly owned subsidiary USG Nevada LLC and NV Energy, for the
purchase of an annual average of up to 19.9 net megawatts of clean, renewable
energy from the San Emidio Geothermal Project located in Washoe County, Nevada.
The 25 year PPA anticipates the development of two electric power generation
units at San Emidio. The Unit 1 power generation plant, scheduled to
achieve commercial operation during the 4th quarter of 2011, is
currently under construction and will replace the existing 3.6 net megawatt
plant at San Emidio. Subject to successful production well development,
the Unit 2 power generation plant is scheduled to be on line during the 2nd
quarter of 2013. Two additional Units 3 and 4 are also planned at San
Emidio after sufficient drilling has been completed to define additional
reservoir production capacity.
