Hot Topic Hour January 19 is Making Coal Plants Green

On January 19 at 10:00 a.m. central time, McIlvaine editors will initiate discussions of some novel ways to make coal plants green as well as review some of the technologies which are better known.  The newest concept is co-location of municipal wastewater treatment power plants and coal power plants. Why send the sludge to the power plant by truck and send the treated wastewater by pipe.  It makes more sense to co-locate the two and use the low pressure steam from the power plant to improve the sewage treatment operations. This can be combined with liquid manure delivered in the same piping from surrounding farms.

Here are some of the other topics that can be discussed:

This session will be collaborative. We encourage discussion and debate.   To register for the "Hot Topic Hour" on Thursday, January 19, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. (central time), click on: http://www.mcilvainecompany.com/brochures/hot_topic_hour_registration.htm.

Exhibiting companies include equipment suppliers and the following consulting and EPC companies:

AECOM, Inc.

AMEC Earth & Environmental

Burns & McDonnell

CH2M HILL

Civil & Environmental Consultants

Environmental Consulting & Technology

Environmental Resources Management (ERM)

Golder Associates, Inc.

Kiewit

Shaw Group, Inc.

Trinity Consultants, Inc.

The large number of consulting and EPC companies insure that there will be a wealth of accumulated knowledge for you to access.  McIlvaine will be an exhibitor and will look forward to your visit.

A number of chemical companies will also be attending.  Natronx will be a first time exhibitor for the reason that it is a new company. Church & Dwight Co. Inc., FMC Corp. and TATA Chemicals have joined forces to produce and sell sodium-based chemicals.

Natronx will spend $60 million to build a factory that can produce 450,000 tons of chemicals classified as "sorbents" by the fourth quarter of 2012. The founding partners will invest equal amounts in the project.

New Plant Construction Confirms Optimism about the Future of Solar Energy

McIlvaine’s Renewable Energy Projects and Update continues to report on new plants under construction around the world to supply the components needed for solar energy production.

*****

GE announced plans to build its new solar panel factory in Aurora, CO. When completed, the advanced manufacturing facility will create 355 jobs in Colorado and will be larger than any existing solar panel factory in the country. GE anticipates the new factory will start up earlier than expected with the first panels coming off the line in 2012 with commercial availability in 2013.

GE will locate the factory in an existing building in Aurora, just east of Denver. This location, which also is in proximity to GE’s existing solar center of excellence, enables an accelerated start-up schedule with production equipment installation beginning in January 2012. At capacity, the new factory will produce enough panels per year to power 80,000 homes and will be larger than 11 football fields. When complete, the new solar factory will highlight a $600 million investment in GE’s solar business.

Colorado already is home to GE Energy’s thin film solar pilot line, where joint technology advancements from GE’s Global Research Center and PrimeStar Solar have been validated and tested. GE completed the acquisition of PrimeStar earlier this year.

TSMC Solar Ltd. has completed equipment move-in in preparation for commercial production ramp at its new CIGS fab in Taichung, Taiwan.

The new highly automated manufacturing facility, dubbed the S-Fab, is a state-of-the-art six story 700,000 square foot LEED certified facility. Initial Phase 1 investment totaled U.S. $258 million with manufacturing capacity of 100 MW per year in 2012, ramping to 300 MW at Phase 1 completion. TSMC Solar’s planned addition of a 300 MW Phase II, when coupled with productivity improvements, will take total facility capacity to 1 gigawatt by 2015.

First panels from the production line are headed for UL and IEC certification and testing with first commercial products expected to be shipped the first quarter of 2012. California Energy Commission listing is slated for mid first quarter 2012.

Spire Corporation, a global solar company providing capital equipment and turnkey, manufacturing lines to produce PV modules, and engineering, procurement and construction integration services for solar systems, announced it has been selected by Sonali Energees Pvt. Ltd. (Sonali Solar) of Gujarat, India to provide a 25 MW PV module turnkey assembly line. This assembly line includes a state-of-the-art Spi-EL Electroluminescence Tester and also has the ability to produce glass to glass modules for building-integrated photovoltaics applications.

Sunpreme, a global manufacturer of low-cost, highly scalable SmartSilicon® solar cells, announced that it closed over $50 million in financing led by the International Finance Corporation, the private sector investment arm of the World Bank Group, joining existing investors Silicon-Valley-based Capricorn Investment Group and Beijing-based China Environment Fund III, L.P. managed by Tsing Capital. The capital infusion is being used to construct a state-of-the-art facility in Jiaxing, China, allowing Sunpreme to continue to expand production of its SmartSilicon® solar cells by year end.

Sunpreme’s SmartSilicon® is a solar cell technology that delivers high-efficiency solar photovoltaic panels at lower costs. Using Sunpreme’s patented technology on largely industry standard production equipment, the company’s cost-effective manufacturing process provides utility-scale and distributed power generation customers with a reliable, high-performance and affordable solar solution.

The company’s low energy-intensity and low environmental impact process does not utilize toxic or rare materials, and thus avoids the unwelcome paradox of exporting clean technology globally while polluting the environment locally.

LDK Solar Co., Ltd., a leading vertically integrated manufacturer of photovoltaic products, announced that the company successfully achieved mechanical completion of its third 5,000 MT polysilicon train at its Mahong, China, polysilicon plant.

There are three 5,000 MT trains in the 15,000 MT Mahong polysilicon plant. Mechanical completion of this third train demonstrates that LDK Solar has successfully completed the plant’s originally designed total polyslicon capacity of 15,000 MT per annum. With the extensive experience obtained from ramping up the previous two trains, the company expects the third train will quickly ramp to reach full capacity production toward the end of 2011. The mechanical completion of the third train also enhances LDK Solar’s leadership in manufacturing costs, lowers the key material supply risk and empowers LDK Solar as a leading player in the PV industry.

LDK Solar has reached a total polysilicon production capacity of 17,000 MT per annum, combining both Mahong and Xiacun polysilicon plants. With the completion of its currently ongoing debottlenecking and hydrochlorination projects in both the Mahong and Xiacun plants, as well as the line B project in Xiacun plant, the company expects to reach a total polysilicon production capacity of 25,000 MT per annum in mid-2012.
