Need for a different type of  Chinese–English Technical Dictionary

There are three problems with Chinese-English technical dictionaries

(1)    They are not comprehensive. Some of the words which are needed such as “DeNox do not appear in English dictionaries let alone Chinese-English dictionaries

(2)    The correct word often is a function of the context. So a linkage is needed

(3)    There is a lack of clarity in classifying terms in English which is magnified with translation into Chinese

 (1)   Dictionaries are not comprehensive

Because the word DeNox does not appear in English technical dictionaries,  the Asians have used words that do appear and this has created considerable confusion. If you google the words “Denitration SCR” you see a disiplay of links to articles in English by Chinese, Korean and Japanese authors.  You also see U.S. patent references but all for applications by Asians.

Even some of the best English speakers are using  “denitration” instead of DeNox or Nox reduction. The words “denitration” and denitrifcation have been used to describe elimination or reduction of nitrogen compounds. Since DeNox eliminates oxygen, denitration is theoretically incorrect. But Denitration seems to be the word of choice instead  of DeNox in Asia.

There are many thousands of such examples. So it is clear that dictionaries need to be created around specific technologies in order to assure that they will be comprehensive

(2)    The correct word is a function of the context. So linkage is needed

The following UPIS string illustrates the importance of context

Universal Decision Process For Keyword:

Bottom of Form

221112 - Fossil Fuel   化石燃料

Coal-Fired   燃煤

Air Quality   空气质量

CO2   二氧化碳

CO2 Reduction   二氧化碳减排

Carbon Capture and Storage   碳捕获和封存

CO2 Compression and Transportation   二氧化碳压缩和运输

CO2 Purification   二氧化碳纯化

CO2 purification involves potentially separating out Nox and Sox . the first step in CO2 reduction is likely to be additional removal of Nox and Sox.  This may follow the existing devices to remove Nox and Sox. So the CO2 purification in this case only refers to removal from the compressed gas after the nitrogen has been removed. Mcilvaine selected CO2 purification instead of CO2 scrubbing to make this distinction. But unless one has the benefit of the   UPIS identifier,  full clarity is not achieved.

(3)  There is a lack of clarity in classifying terms in English which is magnified with translation into Chinese

The UPIS system is based on creating a foster family from genetic lineages. These genetic lineages  will provide the words and relationships that will make the translation much more precise and valuable.

The following is a genetic lineage of absorbers for power plant FGD

These genetic lineages will be subject to review and change based on input from  associations, users and suppliers who have insights. .  Mcilvaine chose “sump scrubber” even though it is not commonly used because the distinguishing feature is a pool of slurry through which the gas must pass. But both Alstom and Chiyoda use the word “bubbling bed”.  Our problem with this term is that the tray scrubber and moving bed scrubber are also bubbling beds.  Should CDS be the base term for circulating dry scrubbers and fluid beds or should it be an alias?

We have labeled the double contact absorber as just a “costumed” spray tower and not a separate category.  We need some input from MHI,  Advatech  and others on this subject. In general Mcilvaine will change the classification terminology to reflect the general consensus..

The solution

Mcilvaine is utilizing the UPIS system to create a unique new type of Chinese –English dictionary. It is focused on narrow technologies and therefore can be made comprehensive. It will use the UPIS identifiers to provide the context. It will use genetic lineages to standardize on the best word selections

Here is an example of how the system works

( 1)  type in a word

purification

The screen displays the closest match or matches

CO2 purification

Chinese Equivalent

·         CO2 Purification    二氧化碳纯化

Context

221112 - Fossil Fuel   化石燃料

CO2   二氧化碳

CO2 Reduction   二氧化碳减排

Carbon Capture and Storage   碳捕获和封存

CO2 Compression and Transportation   二氧化碳压缩和运输

This was an example where the word is a genetic family member but what if the word is an alias

(1)    Type in a word or words

The dictionary will be steadily evolving and will use terms which are included in UPIS. It is anticipated that there will be substantial contributions from users and experts in the various technologies.  Please contact Bob Mcilvaine at rmcilvaine@mcilvainecompany.com with your comments.
