PETROBRAS Experience on Water Management for Brown Fields
G.C. Nunes; L.S. Figueiredo; M. V. Melo; E. B.L. Junior; R.H. Motta; R.C.B.Lage, Petrobras
Brown fields usually associate high volumes of produced water with old and reduced performance units. Because most of Petrobras fields have been producing for more than 20 years now, delivering specified oil and gas has become an increasingly more difficult task. To guarantee operational and economical sustainability debottlenecking is an option but because most of its production comes from offshore fields, the cost of revamping and maintenance of such units can be prohibitive. Alternative options such as sending off-spec oil for onshore treatment, subsea separation, produced water reinjection, infill drilling or even relocating units have been analyzed. Environmental restrictions as well as economic limitations create a huge challenge for which new technologies play a big role. This work presents Petrobras experience with Brown fields and its approach to problem solving. The produced water perspectives are shown and future trends with the use of innovative technologies are explored.
A Novel Gas/liquid Separator to Enhance Production of Deepwater Marginal
Fields
Today, Subsea processing is recognized to be an efficient way for oil production enhancement, especially for fields having challenging reservoir characteristics or laying in very deepwater. These marginal fields must be developed with cost efficient solutions and innovative technologies to allow the economical recovering of the in place hydrocarbons as the conventional solutions are not viable in such cases. The subsea gas/liquid separation associated with the boosting of produced liquids is one of the possible configurations for the depletion of the marginal fields, as the reduced back pressure at the wellhead can allow a larger recovery of the in place hydrocarbons and simplify the hydrate preservation strategy of the production flowlines during shut down. Being installed in deepwater, the subsea processing systems shall address the mechanical and functional constraints that are imposed by the deepwater installation and operation along with the obvious reliability requirements. In order to provide a solution to this challenge, Saipem has developed a subsea gas/liquid separation and boosting station integrating a gravity separator made of pipes, specifically designed for the deepwater environment: the Vertical Multi-Pipe Separator is composed of an array of vertical pipes that provide the required separation and liquid hold up volume. The reduced diameter and wall thickness of the vertical pipes, as compared with the equivalent single separation vessel, is particularly suited in deep and ultra-deep water applications and/or high pressure services. Furthermore, the system relies on the gravity separation whose efficiency is less prone to the input flow rate and the un-steady regimes than dynamic separation processes. To demonstrate the reliability and effectiveness of the multi-pipe separator, an extensive and in depth qualification and testing program has been performed for the validation of the concept and for the confirmation of anticipated performances. In particular, the validation of the separation performances was carried out, within the framework of a JIP sponsored by BP and Total, in a pressurized multiphase loop handling crude oil, natural gas and water.

Abstract
In an effort to understand separation phenomena, improve separation technologies, and mitigate the uncertainty and risk associated with separator design and operation at elevated pressures, high-pressure separation tests have been conducted at 1,500 psig and 2,600 psig over a wide range of gas flow rates and inlet liquid concentrations. The tests were performed at the Southwest Research Institute® Multiphase Flow Facility using hydrocarbons ― natural gas and a liquid hydrocarbon model fluid (ExxsolTM D110, with components C12-C17). The experimental test section used during this study was equipped with compact, high-capacity separation technologies that accomplish high liquid removal efficiencies while minimizing footprint. The unit consisted of a CDS Separation Systems inline cyclonic separator for bulk liquid-phase removal and a downstream vertical separator equipped with compact internals (i.e., a vane-type inlet device, drainable mesh pad coalescer, and demisting cyclones). The design of the test skid provided significant flexibility to evaluate the performance of the separation devices alone or in combination. In this paper, the high-pressure separation testing approach, performance trends, and impact of the results are presented and discussed.

Use of Electrical Submersible Pumping Systems in Offshore and Subsea Environments
Ben D. Gould, Baker Hughes Incorporated
Electrical submersible pumping (ESP) systems have been an efficient method to boost production of oil wells for over half a century. In the past few years, ESP systems have been accepted for use in what once was considered unconventional types of applications, pushing the technology further than ever before. This technology push has encouraged ESP suppliers to devote more time and energy to research and development in order to meet the needs of the expanding application envelope.
This paper will outline the results of the research and development as well as the advancements that have been made or are likely to be made to various components of an ESP system. New and innovative ways in which ESP systems have been deployed as well as the positive effects that these techniques will have on the ultimate well recovery and customer’s return on investment for deepwater projects will be reviewed and discussed. We will highlight the specifics of ESP applications in off-shore and subsea projects, including seabed boosting.

An Evaluation of the Fatigue Performance of Subsea Wellhead Systems and Recommendations for Fatigue Enhancements
John T. Evans, Cameron International & John McGrail, 2H Offshore Engineering Ltd
The specification and selection of subsea wellhead systems is typically based on the use of generic system designs which have a defined extreme load capacity. However the fatigue performance of the wellhead system is also a critical aspect of the equipment which may not always be fully evaluated at the specification and selection stage, as the fatigue life is specific to field design parameters. These parameters can include local environmental loading, drilling rig motions, marine riser stack-ups and BOP configurations, and soil conditions, as well as operational parameters such as riser tensions and mud weights which can vary during different stages of the drilling, completion and work-over operations.
This paper will highlight through the use of analytical results the sensitivity of typical wellhead system designs to changes in these design parameters. This will provide an indication of the significance of these parameters on fatigue life predictions for subsea wellhead and conductor systems, and identify scenarios where fatigue is most likely to be of concern.

Development and Performance of Biodegradable Antiscalants for Oilfield Applications
Wayne Dickinson, SPE and Rick Griffin, SPE, Laura Sanders, Chris Lowen, Kemira
Biodegradable scale inhibitors have been developed that provide excellent inhibition of barium sulfate scale and that meet regulatory requirements for application in the North Sea and in other sensitive marine environments. These inhibitors are in compliance with the “yellow-banded” classification issued by the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, meeting ecotoxicity, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation standards. Using turbidity and dynamic tube-blocking protocol, the inhibitors have been shown to provide barium sulfate inhibition comparable to their non-biodegradable equivalents.
Introduction
Deposition of scale on production equipment impairs the production of oil and gas in reservoirs, down hole, surface and injection operations. Scale inhibitors are often a significant portion of the aqueous based chemical stimulation package used in either the stimulation and/or completion of oil/gas wells. Although highly effective, a number of the chemistries used for these applications-polyacrylates, polyphosphonates, and polysulphonates-have low biodegradability and are unable to meet increasingly strict environmental legislation.
A series of improved polymeric scale inhibitors have been developed in accord with the ecotoxicity, bioaccumulation, and biodegradablity standards set by the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (OSPAR.. These inhibitors are highly effective for control of a variety of alkaline-earth scales and are suitable for use in scaling environments ranging from mild supersaturation to severe conditions where difficult-to-control barium sulfate scales may form. These products perform comparably to their non-biodegradable equivalents while exceeding the standards required for “yellow-banding” status in oil production for the Norwegian sector of North Sea.
Basic polycarboxylic and sulphonated polycarboxylic acid chemistries were used as the basis of the new scale-inhibiting products. The new inhibitors were developed by examination of their scale inhibiting properties relative to conventional polycarboxylates and-in conjunction with biodegradation testing-were optimized with regard to scale inhibition, biodegradability, and price. Characteristics of the chemistries are shown in Table 1.
With the increased biodegradability and excellent scale inhibition performance of these range of chemistries, oil and gas producers can control scale in operations while meeting environmental requirements required in the North Sea and other locations around the world.
Experimental Details
Regulatory Testing
The regulatory requirements for ecotoxicological testing for all chemicals used for offshore drilling in the North Sea are specified in the OSPAR guidelines for the North-East Atlantic. These regulations were implemented in 2001 and are intended to harmonize the mandatory control systems for offshore chemicals. The three categories of tests required by OSPAR are:
• Acute toxicity
• Bioaccumulation
• Seawater biodegradation (persistence)
Case Study on Polymer Gel to Control Water Coning for Horizontal Well in Offshore Oilfield
Dai Caili, China University of Petroleum, You Qing, Peking University and China University, Xie Yuhong, Zhanjiang Oilfield of CNOOC, He Long, Cui Ya, Northwest Oilfield of SINOPEC, Zhao Fulin, China University of Petroleum.
This paper describes polymer gel with different gelation time for water coning control in horizontal well located in Weizhou 11-4 offshore oilfield, CNOOC, China. The selected horizontal well was shut in with zero oil production and 100% water cut before treatment. This paper also reports the detailed information about the treatment, including production history of this horizontal well, gelants formulas with different gelation time optimization, operational procedure and reservoir performance after treatment. In addition, a method is built up to control water coning for horizontal well in offshore oilfeild. The gelants formulas are 0.30%HPAM +0.60%phenol formaldehyde resin, 0.40%HPAM+0.10%Na2Cr2O7+0.20%(NH2)2CS and 0.40%HPAM+0.20%Na2Cr2O7+0.40%(NH2)2CS, with corresponding gelation time of 3.5 day, 2.0 day and 1.0 day separately at 75 degrees celsius.
The above gelants were successively injected with injection volumes of 384 m3, 256 m3 and 128 m3. The overdisplacing fluid was used to displace gelants away from percolation area. Then the well was shut in for four days in order to form gel that could be used as packer between oil-water interface to control water coning. At the same time, real-time monitoring data about injection pressure and rate were also recorded. The treatment resulted in an oil increase of 16.3~27.4 t/d and average water cut decrease of 6%~9% in one year after treatment.
