Universal Continuing Decision Process For: Underground Injection *

In December 2010, the US Environmental Protection Agency finalized two rules related to the sequestration of carbon dioxide. The new rules aim to protect drinking water and to track the amount of carbon dioxide stored underground. Under the authority of the Safe Drinking Water Act, EPA created a new class of injection well for carbon storage, called Class VI, and established standards to ensure that wells used for geologic sequestration are properly sited, constructed, tested, monitored and closed. EPA also finalized a rule extending the greenhouse gas reporting requirements to facilities that carry out geologic sequestration so that the Agency can track the amount of carbon dioxide sequestered by these facilities.
