Michael Porter of Porter McGuffie presented a paper titled "Profiting From Better Airflow in Baghouse " at the 2010 IEEE Cement Industry Conference. He provided insight into the value of CFD analysis not only for baghouse optimization but also for other portions of the kiln system including the burners. Examples included an analysis of a cement kiln baghouse where changes implemented as a result of CFD analysis improved hopper loading and dust stagnation. The modifications included the removal of ladder vanes and the addition of a turning vane in the inlet elbow. In the example the operators were able to convert to ePTFE membrane fiberglass bags “without concerns for short filter bag life due to inlet abrasion.” According to Mr. Porter, the user was able to reduce baghouse related costs by as much as $40,000 per month and decrease compressed air costs as well.
