"Clean Electric Power with Enhanced Torrefied Wood Pellets (ETWP): A New Carbon Neutral Fuel:" Introduction: New patent pending process has promise to solve the global energy and pollution problems caused by fossil fuel coal with a clean carbon neutral fuel. Abstract: Apparatus for biomass Torrefaction including: --A new processing system – Immersion “conduction” heat treatment. --Manufacturing a storable fuel from biomass – Enhanced torrefied wood pellets. --Producing carbon offsets for fossil fuel use – Hydrophobic, long life, storable offset. --Article of manufacture – BIOCOAL Fuel - a carbon neutral fuel. Description: The BIOCOAL Fuel Processing System can produce large quantities of enhanced torrefied wood pellets (ETWP) to replace coal. This new technology finally allows biomass to be converted into a clean useful energy form in a practical and efficient way. Only a small amount (approx. 10%) of the biomass is used to process itself – no outside energy is required. Torrefied wood (TW) is wood that has been heated in an oxygen free environment at high temperature to drive off the moisture and volatile organic compounds and it undergoes an endothermic process that alters the chemistry and structure to create a hydrophobic, friable, solid fuel that burns clean. Unlike wood that absorbs moisture and can be attacked by ants, termites and microbes and decompose quickly. ETWP resist all the above and can be stored for many years. Applications include: --Co-firing with coal in electric power generating plants @ 15%. --Replace coal 100% in electric power generating plants. --Operate small pellet electric generators. --Provide a very uniform high carbon content feedstock for gasification projects. --Practical long life storage product for use as a Carbon Offset. Testing & Evaluation: Preliminary tests show a heat value of 10,000 Btu/pound for ETWP as compared to 8,000 Btu/pound for WP. A sample was submerged in water for 6 hours, air dried for 13 hours and then retested. The heat value was reduced by only 2%, still 18% higher than WP. A small scale processing system is planned to be supplied to a university for independent testing and evaluation. Web site: www.biocoal.net Conclusion: With carbon credits and the global need to find a carbon neutral fuel to replace coal we anticipate that the BIOCOL Fuel in the form of ETWP will be in high demand. The potential for BIOCOAL Fuel is unlimited and could eventually reduce almost all fossil fuel use. This process finally makes the collection and processing of biomass into a fuel very practical and puts the stored suns energy to use.
