Due to a projected oversupply of sulfuric acid in China, the author questions whether base metal smelters will be forced to shut down or reduce operations. He concludes that they will not, due to regional differences in supply and demand of sulfuric acid in China, along with flexibility in the supply chain. Of particular interest is the fact that pyrite-based acid makes up over 20 percent of the supply in China, compared to 7-9 percent in other regions, due to the country’s significant iron ore resources.
