This paper is the second in a series examining issues related to the design of paste and thickened tailings pipeline systems. The first paper presented at Paste06 covered design criteria development, characterisation test work and pipeline flow behaviour modelling. This paper discusses centrifugal and positive displacement pump performance derating for non-Newtonian slurries, and hydraulic and mechanical design of paste and thickened tailings systems. The paper concludes by exploring specific aspects of designing thickener underflow pump systems, centrifugal pump systems and gravity backfill systems for Bingham plastic mixtures.
