Title: US Demand for Smart Meter Products and Services to Reach $4.4 Billion in 2016

Smart meter product and service demand in the US is projected to increase more than 11% annually to $4.4 billion in 2016. This demand will be driven by the increased visibility of these meters and declining cost difference between the smart meters and the older metering products. The rising penetration of smart meters into the market will also raise the number of meters to be serviced and parts to be ordered, all contributing to an increase in both gas and water meter markets. This demand has consequently caused a greater demand in meter data management software. In 2011, there were approximately 325 million electric, water and natural gas meters installed in the US, 45% of them being smart meters. This percentage is expected to rise to 63% of the meters installed by 2016 and 80% by 2021. Smart meters are expected to represent more than 90% of all electric meters in use by 2021.
