China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) has announced that it will spend RMB220 million ($34 million) on environmental monitoring and information management in 2011, an increase of 42% on last year. The MEP’s 2011 budget will go towards furnishing 136 automatic water quality monitoring stations across the country, as well as more than 1,000 additional river, lake and coastal sampling sites to collect information on acid rain and air quality.
