As full ratification of the 2004 Ballast Water Management Convention approaches, the size of the world Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) market has become a subject of intense scrutiny and speculation. Twelve months following full ratification BWTS will have to be installed aboard all qualifying vessels according to a timetable depending on their ballast water capacity and age. BWTS manufacturers and vendors are interested in the commercial opportunities presented by this market, and shipowners are concerned about the logistics of installing treatment system aboard vessels within the proposed timetable. In this paper, the world commercial fleet has been sorted according to flag country, vessel type, number and deadweight tonnage in order to assess the effort required to comply with the convention when it comes into force. The information includes some current equipment and installation costs, designed to gauge the market size, which appears larger than earlier published estimates. Click Here For Complete Article Text
