Woodside Energy Ltd operates the North West Shelf Joint Venture LNG Plant on the Burrup Peninsula. Port facilities associated with the plant include LNG and LPG offloading jetties and the King Bay Supply Base. The latter facility provides support to the joint venture’s North West Shelf exploration and production facilities. To comply with the plant’s Operating Licence conditions, Woodside is required to monitor the intertidal and subtidal marine environments adjacent to the plant’s port facilities. Since 1985, URS has undertaken the Chemical and Ecological Monitoring of Mermaid Sound (ChEMMS) programme on behalf of Woodside. The programme comprises a chemical component (sampling and analysis of oysters and sediments for contaminants such as metals, hydrocarbons and tributyltin) and a biological component (monitoring of mangrove, coral and rocky shore fauna communities). The continuity of URS personnel engaged on the ChEMMS programme has been highly beneficial to Woodside. The logistics, field programme, data interpretation and reporting are all conducted with a high degree of efficiency due to URS’s familiarity with the working environment and with Woodside’s requirements.
