Title: Ministry of Environmental Protection Achieves COD Reduction Goals in 11th Five-Year Plan

MEP spokesperson, Tao Detian, told the media that MEP, together with NDRC, National Bureau of Statistics, and Ministry of Supervision, completed the assessment of the performances of the provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government, as well as five major power corporations in reducing the total amount of major pollutants in the year 2010 and during the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010). The chemical oxygen demand discharged in the year amounted to 12.381 million tons, down by 3.09% from the 2009 level; The total amounts of chemical oxygen demand and sulfur dioxide dropped by 12.45% and 14.29% respectively from the 2005 levels. In 2010, the municipal wastewater treatment capacity increased by 19 million m3/day. During 2006-2010, the treatment capacity of municipal wastewater had increased by over 60 million m3/d to 125 million m3/d, and the rate of municipal wastewater being treated had risen from 52% in 2005 to above 75%.
