Title: Hai River Revitalization Design, Tianjin, China

AECOM was commissioned to develop an overall strategic plan and environmental masterplan aimed at revitalizing a vast stretch of the Hai River, which winds its way through the metropolis to the Bohai Sea. A key feature in the landscape - the waterway, is being given back to the people in a scheme that has transformed its banks into a continuous green corridor of accessible, linked public space and promenades. Focal open spaces of varying sizes, characters and usages have been injected with new landscape features inspired by the city's identity and cultural heritage. Local historical materials, juxtaposed with a brighter color palette, emphasize a scale and texture that resonates with the traditional city fabric while also creating a vibrant and contemporary ambiance. Extending more than 20 kilometers, the regenerated area at the heart of the city around the river will provide a framework structure for cohesive yet diverse future development. In addition to upgrading and transforming the physical environment of the core river area, work on the future vision also included an economic assessment and analysis for financial modeling to forecast the roles of commerce, foreign trade, science, and technology in bringing Tianjin into full play as part of northern China's economic hub. Traffic circulation was also addressed to combat congestion and improve travel conditions in this growing international center of commerce.
