HDPE was first used for gas pipelines in the 1960s and has been used for sewer and water applications in the United States and Canada for about 30 years. For gas pipelines, HDPE holds about a 90 percent market share. However, HDPE comprises less than 5 percent of the water market. HDPE has been much more widely accepted internationally. In Europe, HDPE constitutes 30 to 50 percent of the water market, with that number reaching up to 90 percent in some countries.
