In horizontal wells using SAGD, steam is pumped in to heat the top well, loosening the oil and reducing its viscosity until gravity drops the oil into the lower well--where it is transferred by pipe for treatment. Outokumpu's Wildwood, Florida pipe mill is supplying major Canadian oil sands projects with long (up to 48 ft.) pipe in 10" and 12" 2205 Code Plus Two®, and 10" super duplex Outokumpu 2507 used to handle brackish water issues. "Because of the high temperatures, stainless steel is used in steam production and throughout the tanks, tubes, and piping which is located above ground and deep into the ground," explained Outokumpu's Vice President Market Development, Poul-Erik Arnvig. "Well operators need piping with strength and resistance to stress corrosion cracking, and for that, duplexes are the answer." To this point, duplex 2205 Code Plus Two has been the most requested Outokumpu grade for the Canadian oil sands. "I expect all our duplex grades would be options--both upwards and downwards in alloy content--based on the processes and conditions on site," Arnvig noted. Outokumpu produces a family of stainless steel grades for the oil & gas industry; including our lean duplex LDX 2101®; Outokumpu 2304; 2205 Code Plus Two®; LDX 2404®; and our super duplex Outokumpu 2507.
