Title: KGHM to Expand Copper Smelting Operations in Poland

KGHM operates 9 open-pit and underground mines located in Poland, Canada, the USA and Chile and is actively advancing 4 projects. KGHM produces key global resources including copper, copper sulphate, gold, silver, nickel, nickel sulphate, molybdenum, rhenium, lead, sulphuric acid, selenium and platinum group metals. The company is based in Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Lubin, Poland. The business strategy for the years 2015–2020 focuses on continuing growth and maximizing shareholder value with a goal to produce over one million tonnes of copper equivalent metal. The Legnica copper smelter/refinery in Poland produces copper with 99.99Cu content in the form of cathodes and billets. Starting in 2020 the Legnica plant will produce 160 thousand tonnes of cathode copper annually. The plant operates Solinox waste-free gas desulphurisation installation. This installation has an efficiency of 98%. In order to process the growing stream of variable types of copper scrap the Smelter plans to construct a new process line (a so-called Scrap Processing Plant) with a target copper volume of approx. 140,000 Mg/year. The project will include an Andritz Maerz furnace, a wet scrubber for a TSL furnace. This furnace will also be equipped with a fabric filter with activated carbon injection. Scrubber and other plant wastewater will be directed to the existing sewage treatment plant of ENERGETYKA Sp. z o.o. This plant also distributes heat and is a subsidiary of KGHM.
