At two shows last week visitors could quickly determine who they wanted to see and make advance contact to ensure a trip to the stand was worthwhile.

The Chem Show is being held December 10-12, 2013 in NYC. The route maps will be particularly useful to attendees because the show covers a number of different industries which are only vaguely related under the chemical industry umbrella.

Some flow and treatment needs are unique and some are common. Power, intake water treatment, cooling water treatment and HVAC air treatment are common. However, the wastewater, air exhausts and process flow and treatment needs are likely to be substantially different from one plant to another.

There will be a decision stop for each product in each of the vertical road maps. Discussion groups will also be encouraged and reported. All of the following information will be inked from the Orchard display above.

Chemical plants with boilers must meet the new MACT standards by 2016. Scrubbers and particulate upgrades will be needed at most plants burning coal. The route map will lead you to those exhibitors with solutions.

Participants will include xxx of KC on scrubbers, xxx of KC on precipitators xxx of XXX on scrubber nozzles xxx of xxx on stainless housing materials, xxx of xxx consulting on system design and MACT.

A number of influential magazines will have stands. Typically the key personnel are roaming and the stand is primarily to supply free samples. We will include mobile contacts for the roaming personnel and links to relevant articles in the publications related to specific decision stops.

Chemical Industry to Spend $440 Million Next Year on New Centrifuges and Clarifiers

Chemical manufacturers will spend $440 million in 2014 for centrifuges, clarifiers, hydrocyclones and dissolved air flotation systems. Asia will edge out the other continents due to the major capital expenditures for plants manufacturing basic chemicals. The lower cost of energy is encouraging chemical industry growth in the U.S. The opposite effect is being felt in Europe.

Centrifuges will be the leading product type purchased. Decanter or scroll type centrifuges are used for dewatering of slurries. The disc type centrifuges are used for many process applications separating both solids from liquids and liquids from liquids. Both types of devices are complex machines requiring significant capital investment in manufacturing facilities. There is also considerable knowledge and experience needed to support the operators. As a result, there tends to be a few large international companies which achieve high market share.

The leaders in the industry are European companies such as Alfa Laval, GEA, Andritz, Pieralisi and Flottweg. The top five companies have more than a 65 percent market share. The top twenty companies have a 90 percent market share. By contrast, the largest clarifier supplier has only a few percent market shares.

These revenues do not include repair parts and service. Because of the complexity and high rotational speed of centrifuge elements, the OEMs have garnered a high percentage of the repair part business. When the repair part opportunity is included, the market nearly doubles.

The Pharmaceutical Industry Ultrapure Water (UPW) Purchases to Reach $0.5 Billion In 2017

The pharmaceutical industry demands for UPW for injection (WFI) and UPW for cleaning process equipment and other uses will result in purchases close to $500 million in 2017 up from $425 million this year. This is the latest forecast in the continually updated Ultrapure Water: World Markets published by the McIlvaine Company. (www.mcilvainecompany.com)

The forecast includes hardware such as filters, piping, pumps and instruments. It also includes consumables such as membranes and ion-exchange resins. In general, the contamination prevention demands are so high that specially designed hardware and consumables are needed.

The largest growth is coming in Asia where there is a construction boom centered around generic drug manufacture. The major drug companies of the world are building generic production facilities in China, India and other Asian countries.

One of the areas of greater investment is in measurement and control. Better instruments to measure contaminants and flow along with software to optimize processes are allowing pharmaceutical plants to achieve better contamination control at reasonable cost. So–called smart pumps and valves which report their condition further the optimization potential.

There are equipment improvements such as electrodeionization and membrane contractors for gas removal. There are consumables improvements such as reverse osmosis membranes which achiever greater efficiency at comparable energy consumption.
