Alstom to Provide HRSGs to 1300 MW Brunswick County

Alstom has been awarded a contract by Fluor Corp. to provide three heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) for Dominion Virginia Power's 1,300 MW Brunswick County Power Station that will come online in 2016. These units will incorporate Alstom's Optimized for Cycle and Constructability design, which offers better performance during plant cycling and a lower overall cost of construction. SCR and carbon monoxide catalyst technology embedded in the HRSGs will reduce overall emissions. Construction of the Brunswick County Power Station is pending approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission.

Alstom state-of-the-art heat recovery steam generators

Alstom, a global leader in power generation technology, has been selected to provide three state-of-the-art heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) for Dominion Virginia Power’s (NYSE:D) new 1,300 megawatt Brunswick County Power Station.

These units will be the largest HRSG’s supplied by Alstom for the North America market and each unit will be coupled with a MHI501G gas turbine. In addition to this contract, Alstom is also supplying three HRSGs to be coupled with MHI501G gas turbines for Dominion’s Warren County Power Station through a contract awarded in October of 2011.

The new facility will be located approximately 180 miles south of Washington, D.C. near Lawrenceville, Virginia, and will provide enough power to meet the needs of more than 325,000 homes when it comes online in 2016. Alstom is contracted to Fluor Corporation, which is leading the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning efforts for the project.

These HRSG units incorporate Alstom’s OCC™ - Optimized for Cycle and Constructability – design, which offers better performance during gas plant cycling and a lower overall cost of construction. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and carbon monoxide catalyst technology embedded in the HRSGs significantly reduce overall emissions from the plant.

“The Brunswick County project highlights the impact abundant domestic natural gas supplies are having on America’s energy portfolio, and Alstom is proud that our technology is contributing to its success,” said Patrick Fetzer, Vice President and head of Alstom’s North American gas business. “Since providing some of the world’s first HRSGs, we have worked to refine and enhance our designs based on customer feedback. These new units are built to perform well at base load and part load, which translates to more operational flexibility and a better value for the customer.”

HRSGs are the linkage between a combined cycle plant’s gas-fired and steam-based power generation capabilities. When a gas turbine’s hot exhaust stream passes through the modules of an HRSG, water is converted to steam which then spins a steam turbine.

Construction of the Brunswick County Power Station is pending approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission.
