Roll goods suppliers are building new manufacturing facilities in the fast growing East Asia market.  As a result, exports will nearly equal imports in this region next year.  The trend continues toward membranes. This media utilizes a membrane film for filtration with a non-woven substrate. Several membrane media suppliers also supply complete bags.

Non-woven fabrics are widely used. Woven fabrics are less popular than they were decades ago. The largest use is woven glass for high temperature applications.

The cement industry is a large consumer of fabric filter media. The biggest potential is in the power industry.  New industrial boiler emission limits in the U.S. will force operators to install fabric filters.  The requirement to lower toxic metal emissions will be one driver. The requirement to reduce HCl will result in the injection of lime and sodium compounds and subsequent capture in a fabric filter.

Chinese power plants have traditionally used electrostatic precipitators to capture flyash. New emission limits will result in a significant market for filters and media. This potential is so large that it could boost media purchases by $1 billion annually if all Chinese power plants made the switch.

Renewable Energy Briefs

First of Its Kind Investment Guarantee by USAID Will Catalyze $100 Million in Funding to Promote Clean Energy Solutions for India

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced that it will partner with U.S.-based institutional investor Northern Lights Capital Group to facilitate a $100 million investment in India's clean energy sector via Nereus Capital. This investment, through the Agency's Development Credit Authority, is expected to create hundreds of additional megawatts of sustainable energy capacity and will help to advance India's burgeoning clean energy industry.

The partnership is the first time in the agency's history that it has partnered with a private investment fund to facilitate targeted investment. USAID will provide a 40 percent credit guarantee for a $100 million limited partner commitment to Nereus Capital's India Alternative Energy Fund managed by Northern Lights Capital Group, an institutional investor.

In order to meet latent demand and address energy shortfalls, the India government has set a target of 30,000 megawatts of renewable energy generation capacity in the next five years.

CleanWorld Expanding Successful Sacramento BioDigester

On the heels of the successful launch of the Sacramento BioDigester in December, 2012, CleanWorld recently officially broke ground to expand the 10,000 tons per year facility by 300 percent to 40,000 tons per year making it the largest commercial high-solids food waste digester in the U.S. Upon completion in December, 2013, the Sacramento BioDigester will convert 100 tons per day of food waste into renewable energy in the forms of heat, electricity, natural gas, and fertilizer enhancements.

The Sacramento BioDigester received tremendous attention last year when CleanWorld announced that the Phase I project, which broke ground June 2012, had already began accepting food waste in early December. Earlier this month, the Sacramento BioDigester began providing renewable compressed natural gas (CNG) to the adjacent CNG Fueling Station operated by Atlas Disposal – providing clean renewable fuel for the company’s waste hauling fleet.

When complete, the Sacramento BioDigester will produce 700,000 diesel gallons per year of renewable CNG and prevent the release 18,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The CleanWorld facility will produce 8 million gallons a year of organic soils and fertilizer products for Sacramento area farms and agriculture and generate 1 million kilowatts of electricity to be used to power the facility and the adjacent Fueling Station.

Gehrlicher Solar America Corporation Awarded GSA Schedule Contract

Gehrlicher Solar America Corporation, a leading global photovoltaic (PV) solar energy integrator, announced it has been awarded a five-year General Services Administration (GSA) schedule contract. This extensively used government contract vehicle allows U.S. federal civilian and Department of Defense agencies to secure Gehrlicher Solar’s high performance and cost effective solar PV-centric energy solutions via a schedule of pre-negotiated rates, terms and conditions.

Gehrlicher Solar’s partnership with GSA provides opportunities for federal agencies (most of whom are required to adhere to energy security, renewable energy and greenhouse gas emission mandates) to easily contract with Gehrlicher Solar America Corp. for their solar energy solution design, engineering, procurement and construction services. The partnership also provides Gehrlicher Solar with the ability to expand educational efforts by providing detailed, agency location specific information on PV-centric energy solutions which are micro-grid ready and may include battery storage.

Anbaric Transmission Endorses Role for Large Hydro in Regional Energy Purchases

Anbaric Transmission hails the coordinated initiative by five New England states to include large hydro in the mix of resources that could be purchased under a regional procurement for renewable energy.  "This is exactly the kind of commitment that New England needs to secure affordable and renewable energy long into the future" said Edward Krapels, CEO of Anbaric Transmission.  He added that "in this era of historically low natural gas prices and extreme storms, it's critical to secure low-cost energy supplies as we shift to a greater reliance on renewable energy.  The Governors' desire to blend of hydro and renewable energy does exactly that." Anbaric Transmission is a developer of the Green Line Project, a 1000 megawatt high voltage, direct current (HVDC) transmission project that would deliver wind energy produced in Aroostook County, ME near the Canadian border to greater Boston. It is also developing the Grand Isle Intertie, a 400 megawatt transmission connection between upstate New York and Vermont.

"Anbaric has long believed that combining New England based wind development with firming hydropower resources is the perfect project for the cost-conscious regional ratepayer interested in both increased reliability and renewable energy," said Krapels.  "Hydropower can enable wind development in the region by lowering the overall cost of transmission needed to bring renewable resources to market and providing the best 'all in' price. We're very pleased to see this initiative by the Governors.  It's consistent with what they agreed to last July in Vermont at the New England Governors' Conference and means huge support for the affordable renewable energy development in New England."

U.S. Forest Service Awards Nearly $2.5 Million for Renewable Energy Projects

U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell announced the award of nearly $2.5 million in grants to 10 small businesses and community groups for wood-to-energy projects that will help expand regional economies and create new jobs.

“These grants help grow new jobs, support clean energy production and improve our local environments, especially in reducing fire threats,” said Tidwell. “Communities from Massachusetts to Alaska will benefit from the program this year.”

The projects will use woody material removed from forests during projects such as wildfire prevention and beetle-killed trees, and process woody biomass in bioenergy facilities to produce green energy for heating and electricity. The awardees will use funds from the Woody Biomass Utilization Grant program to further the planning of such facilities by funding the engineering services necessary for final design, permitting and cost analysis.

In fiscal year 2012, 20 biomass grant awards from the Woody Biomass Utilization Grant program totaling approximately $3 million were made to small business and community groups across the country. This $3 million investment leveraged more than $400 million of rural development grants and loan guarantees for woody biomass facilities. The program has contributed to the treatment of more than 500,000 acres and removed and used nearly 5 million green tons of biomass at an average cost of just $66 per acre. Grantees also reported a combined 1,470 jobs created or retained as a result of the grant awards.

Out of the 17 applications received, the Forest Service selected 10 small businesses and community groups as grant recipients for these awards. According to the requirements, all 10 recipients provided at least 20 percent of the total project cost. Non-federal matching funds total nearly $6.3 million.
