U.S. Taconite Mine Violations and Fines

Under current regulations, taconite mining wastes in Minnesota and Michigan are currently exceeding discharge limits for mercury, selenium, sulfates.

Nine taconite mines and related production and transport facilities in Minnesota and Michigan (seven in MN, two in MI) account for nearly all U.S. iron ore production. The chart below shows dozens of air and water quality violations resulting in more than $790,000 in fines plus cleanup orders and stipulations costing another $9.1 million.

The facts show all modern U.S. Taconite mines have violations and fines since 2004:

Columbian Coal Mine Uses Xylem RO and Sand Filters

Puerto Bolívar coal terminal in Latin America is one of the largest in the world. It is located on the coast of La Guajira State, in the northeastern part of Colombia.

Older Desalination Systems to be Replaced

In an effort to upgrade the production of water at the port, the company, Carbones Del Cerrjon, decided to replace the existing desalination systems. The three systems to be replaced were approximately 20 years old and employed a multi-flash evaporative process for desalinating sea water.

Carbones Del Cerrejon purchased three reverse osmosis (RO) desalination systems from ITT. Each unit has the capacity of producing 550 cubic meters of purified water per day.

Because of the arid region, raw water is drawn from an open intake seawater design that was also used in the older system. In the RO system design, the raw water is pre-filtered to reduce suspended particles in order to protect the membranes in the RO system. Six tanks with ultimedia sand filtration are used for this task. Each tank is loaded with seven different layers of sand as the filtration media. The particulate matter is reduced to a point where the 5 micron filter in the reverse osmosis unit is used for the final polishing prior to going into the membrane process.

The reverse osmosis systems from ITT drastically reduced the footprint for the port’s desalination facilities.

Chile’s Water Use Laws in Transition

The mining industry operates primarily in northern Chile, a very arid region with limited freshwater supplies. Water is scarce, but the scarcity is exacerbated by Chile’s water laws. In most countries, the use of water at the source is free. Water has a “cost” only after value has been added through treatment or transport. In Chile, however, access to water is a property right that can be privately owned and traded as a commodity.

Over the years, ownership of water rights has become concentrated in the hands of a few major companies, often to the detriment of indigenous people and agricultural users. Chile’s President proposed reforms in 2009 which would have removed water from private ownership. Companies objected to the change, fearing that water rights would be taken away without compensation. The proposed reforms were stopped by the current administration upon its election in 2010. Given the volatility of the issue, many mining companies have invested in water re-use and recycling technologies, or have turned to other sources of water such as sea water, to ensure a reliable supply of water.

Godwin HS150HH Heidra Pump Used for Mine Dewatering

The Godwin HS150HH hydraulic submersible pump is a compact self-contained pumping unit featuring a 6" (150 mm) submersible hydraulic side discharging pump and a diesel driven power pack. The HS150HH offers improved performance and operating efficiencies that cannot be matched by standard electric submersible models. With variable speed diesel engine power, the Heidra HS150HH can meet a variety of flow and head requirements up to 1,450 GPM (329 m3/h) and 280′ (85 m) of total dynamic head with a simple throttle adjustment. Add the ability to pass solids to 13⁄8" (35 mm) in diameter, dry-running capabilities and a cast chromium steel impeller, and you have a rugged dewatering/solids- handling, self-contained hydraulic submersible pump ready to go anywhere.

Alumina Conference: 9th International Alumina Quality Workshop 2012

Date: 18 - 22 March 2012

Location:  Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre, Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Website:  http://www.aqw.com.au/

The Alumina Quality Workshop began in 1988 as a forum to bring the world’s alumina producers and their customers together to exchange ideas and information around a common goal of improved product quality. Over time, the workshop has evolved into a major international symposium, covering all aspects of the production of alumina from bauxite, of which alumina quality remains an important aspect. The AQW symposia continue to be held in Australia at an interval of three years.

Incorporated in 1995, AQW (Inc.) is the association charged with the organization and production of the conference. The AQW executive committee consists of representatives of each of the major Australian alumina producers, with the chair (and host) rotating for each conference. AQW is a non-profit organization.
