Schenck Process Acquires All Assets in Applied Plasma Physics AS and APP ModuPower AS

Schenck Process has acquired all assets in the Norwegian companies Applied Plasma Physics AS and APP ModuPower AS (APP).

The APP core product is the ModuPowerTM High Frequency Switch Mode Power Supply.

Dr. Jochen Weyrauch, CEO of Schenck Process Group states, “We are very excited that APP has joined the Schenck Process Group, especially since we already had a very close cooperation for years. Integrating the ModuPowerTM technology within our environmental controls solutions helps to support our customers to meet increasingly strict environmental regulations.”

APP continues its business in Norway under the Schenck Process and Stock brand names and will trade as Schenck Process Norge AS. The company is now being integrated into our global network to benefit from our close customer relationships, extensive technology and industry knowledge and our global sourcing and production.

Market for Electrostatic Precipitators Will Exceed $9.7 Billion In 2015

Sales of electrostatic precipitator systems will be just under $10 billion next year. Most of the sales will be in Asia. This is the conclusion reached by the McIlvaine Company in Electrostatic Precipitator World Market. (www.mcilvainecompany.com)

The continued rapid expansion of coal-fired power in Asia will raise the purchases on this continent to over $7.7 billion next year. Asia will also be purchasing substantial numbers of precipitators for mining, cement and pulp mill applications.

A substantial potential exists in the U.S. for wet precipitators. One reason is that U.S. EPA has defined total particulate to include discrete particles plus condensed droplets. Dry collectors operating at 350°F will not capture condensibles since they are still in the vapor stage. If the gas is cooled and the droplets formed, a wet precipitator is then a very efficient collection device.

Another potential is the use of wet precipitators in conjunction with wet scrubbers to compete with dry scrubbers combined with fabric filters. Many old coal-fired power plants in the U.S. are rejecting the widely used wet limestone forced oxidation scrubbing system. This system makes wallboard quality gypsum using a low cost reagent. Life cycle costs over twenty-five years are attractive. However, the high capital cost makes the option expensive if the remaining plant life is only ten years.

One lower cost option is dry scrubbing followed by fabric filtration. Lime is the reagent, so the operating costs are higher than with limestone. Another option is to replace the existing precipitator with a scrubber followed by a wet precipitator. The scrubber will operate in the natural oxidation mode. Lime is the reagent. The soupy sludge is chemically fixed resulting in a superior landfill product. One attractive feature of this option is the removal of the toxic metals from the environment.

GDP MARKET UPDATE HEADLINES

February 2014

AMERICAS

ASIA

EUROPE / AFRICA / MIDDLE EAST

AMERICAS

United States

While 2013 didn't exactly go out with a roar, it put in a solid showing. According to the advance report by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, real gross domestic product grew at an annual rate of 3.2% in the fourth quarter. Against a 4.1% annual rise in the third, this marked the best back-to-back quarterly performance in nearly two years.   (The remaining text is not included in this sample.)

ASIA

China

China's economy grew at a faster pace last year than the government's official target, even as Beijing sought to implement painful economic reforms.

Gross domestic product grew by 7.7% in 2013 over the previous year, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics, a performance that matched the median estimate of a CNN Money survey. Full-year expansion was supported by 7.7% growth in the final quarter of the year, beating the survey forecast of 7.6% by a whisker.   (The remaining text is not included in this sample.)

EUROPE / AFRICA / MIDDLE EAST

Spain

While the rest of Spain's economy is either stagnant or in decline, a new report shows that the so-called submerged economy is booming and accounted for 24.6% of GDP in 2012, 6.8% higher than in 2008.

The report by Spain's inland revenue department titled The Cost of the Submerged Economy: Increased Fraud During the Crisis claims that the black economy is now worth €253bn (£208bn) – €60bn more than in 2008.

Meanwhile, figures released recently show that Spain's GDP rose by 0.3% in the last quarter of 2013, up from 0.1% in the third quarter. This represents the biggest rise in Spanish GDP since the beginning of 2008.   (The remaining text is not included in this sample.)
